Web3? NFTs? What?
Web3, what it means and why it'll change how we interact with content. Updates on future MaterialFuture releases and lists of notable news articles and newsletters featured this week.
First… What is “Web3”?
Ok, so this term is overused and often parodied in mainstream media, but the upcoming rise in Web3 applications and uses are something that you shouldn’t miss. If you’re an artist, writer, activist, or whatever you can benefit from all these systems and allow your fans access to services and goods through direct and instant means. This revolution of content empowers users and allows anyone anywhere to own their content and monetize it if they choose to.
So the main selling point of all these Web3 services is the decentralization of assets and actual proof of ownership for digital goods. Decentralization being that no one central system is in control but rather groups of dedicated people all come together to run and grow the system, so the way the internet was before google.
People that play games, buy digital products such as movies, music, skins in games, and many other items would be able to own these like they would physical items and have the ability to buy/sell/trade at their own will.
Ownership?
Ownership is a major point I like to make when on-boarding people in Web3 because to me it’s amazing. Imagine buying an album from an artist you like and as with your secure wallet you can now enjoy your content anywhere - in theory. Something like
I think NFTs and art on Web3 has been the best thing for artists. If you’re an artist of any kind you can sell fans your art and they get to own that piece you’ve made and help fund your main ventures. I’ve seen musicians sell singles and even full albums and earn quite a great amount doing so. Ownership is important in real life and will be a major aspect of web3.
Security in Web3
Security will need to a major aspect of web3 as the more people that adopt it the more that scammers and the like will as well. That’s why, as early adopters we need to work towards not only on-boarding people into web3 but telling people how to stay secure on the web and with their wallets.

Notable Stories
Some notable stories I’ve seen from my feeds this week that are making some waves.
Chat GPT Purchased by Micro$oft?
One of the biggest acquisitions in recent months that could have major effects in the tech industry. The first casualty to come from this is the 10k workers that were let go at Microsoft this past week, and it came in the name of “cutting costs”. Potentially more companies could be letting employees go in lieu of automation and AI replacements,.
